🚂 A Piece of Augusta’s Past: The Train Depot
If you noticed the name Depot Alley just outside the Charming Retreat, there’s a good reason why. This peaceful lane once served as the bustling entrance to the Augusta Train Depot, a key part of the town’s transportation network during the height of river and rail travel.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the railroad and the Ohio River were lifelines for Augusta’s growth—bringing people, commerce, and goods to and from the region. The depot stood where the current parking lot now sits, serving as a gateway to the town for decades.
But as highways expanded and motor vehicle traffic increased, the importance of rail transport declined. The depot eventually closed and was later damaged by a fire in the early 1970s. It was torn down shortly after, and the land was transferred from the railroad to the City of Augusta, which later sold the property in 2018. Today, it remains an open lot—quiet, but full of stories.
